My new addiction...

...SUSHI!!!

So, i have been a big fan of this stuff since I first tried it about 3 or 4 years ago. I have tried everything from the basic grocery variety to the hard core restaurant style. My favorites so far are divided into two categories: grocery store, and restaurant. From the grocery store (Kowalski's & Byerly's) are the Bagel Roll, California Roll, and the Philadelphia Roll. From the restaurant side its the Rainbow Roll, and select specialty rolls like the Snow White Roll, Godzilla Roll, Minnesota Roll, and the Angel Hair Roll. But, that was until I went to Benihana Restaurant with a friend of mine...

There I was exposed to the AMAZINGNESS that is the Las Vegas Roll!!!

In it is salmon, cream cheese, and avocado. It is then tempura battered and fried. Then sliced at toped with a ring of jalapeno pepper, spicy sauce, and a dot of hot chili sauce. They look like little eyeballs, but the taste...oh the TASTE!! They are best when you get them hot! Go ahead a grab one and dip it in some soy sauce and wasabi and dig right in!! The cream cheese and avocado melt in your mouth and the batter is still warm! Oh it is such pure deliciousness! A little guilty pleasure that a gal needs every once in a while ;-)

The other restaurants that I have been too include Nikki's Steakhouse and The Bento Box, both in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Sushi at Crave Restaurant

A little sushi 101 for some readers who are unfamiliar with the subject at hand. What I am talking about is Sushi, or Maki, which is usually rolled in nori (seaweed) either with rice on the inside or outside and and a filling (seafood and/or vegetables) in the center. There is also Nigiri which is hand pressed with a slice of fish/seafood over hand pressed rice, usually served in pairs. And Sashimi which are thin slices of seafood arranged artistically on a serving dish. All of these options are served with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. Typically you mix the wasabi and the soy sauce together to a ratio of your liking. More wasabi = more kick in each bite. Wasabi is a spice that is more like a punch. It hits you and then leaves, unlike a spice like a pepper that lingers in your mouth for a while. Eye watering is a common side effect of Wasabi and for some it is the best burn ever! Really clears your nasal passages!

Anywho, I highly recommend giving the Las Vegas Roll a try if you a just diving into the wonderful world of sushi! Really, all you taste is cream cheese, fried goodness, and soy sauce! Its yummy!
